Suunto’s high-end multisport smartwatch the Spartan Ultra now comes with a special edition gold-plated titanium5 bezel, and the heart rate enabled Sport Wrist HR comes in Forest and Copper variants with copper-plated stainless steel bezels with buckles and buttons to match.

The Suunto Spartan Ultra sits at the top of the sports watch food chain, along with the Garmin Fenix 5 which provides healthy competition. One thing the Fenix has over the Spartan Ultra is fashion appeal – looking like a distinctive and pricier watch – a good reason for Suunto to add some gold into the mix.

Released in August 2016, the Spartan Ultra is handmade in Finland and offers tons of  features for sports and activity tracking, plus a color touchscreen protected with Sapphire crystal. It has a built-in GPS with guided navigation and heatmaps, many advanced dynamics and modes for sports such as cycling, running, snow sports, swimming and triathlon, a full suite of activity tracking features, smart notifications and 100 meter water-resistance. It also comes with or without a Smart Sensor heart rate monitor for the expense of an extra $50.

The Suunto Sport wrist HR is the sporty sibling of the Spartan. It has a more simple look with a plain bezel but offers the same touchscreen display and many of the same sports and activity tracking features. It is basically the same as the Suunto Sport which was released in September 2016, except it has a slightly chunkier build to accommodate the built-in heart rate monitor. The Sport HR marks Suuntos move into wrist-based heart rate monitoring to keep pace with rivals such as Garmin, Polar and TomTom who now, are all offering HRMs on the wrist. As far as accuracy goes, the Suunto Sport Wrist HR is up there with the best (TomTom Spark), but if you want maximum accuracy, the watch is also compatible with the Suunto Smart Sensor chest strap.

Suunto’s special edition multisport smartwatches will be available at Suunto.com and select retail stores starting May 17 2017. The Spartan Ultra Gold edition will set you back 869€ (including HRM Smart Sensor), and the Spartan Sport Wrist HR Forest and Copper editions will be 549€.
