You don’t need to fork out a sizeable chunk of cash to capture 3D images and video for your VR experience, thanks to Weeview, a Taiwanese startup who have created an affordable alternative to expensive 360 degree cameras, in the form of their Eye-Plug 3D.

The Weeview Eye-Plug couldn’t be easier to use. Simply plugging the Lightweight (6 grams) dongle into the Micro-USB port on your Android device will allow you to capture any moment in 360 degrees and watch it back with any compatible VR viewer, including Google Cardboard. The Eye-Plug dongle design keeps bulkiness at a minimum, and is no bigger than the average thumb.

The Eye-Plug features a four-element (3 plastic + 1 filter) reversible, pivoting lens, allowing it to be either a front or rear-facing camera. It has a 2-megapixel resolution – enough for current 3D video, plus agreeable with the limited bandwidth on current smartphone USB 2.0 ports.

It has a pixel array of 1280 x 720 and supports HD resolution at 30 fps with JPEG and MP4 output formats. It offers f/2.0 aperture, a 0.9 to infinity object distance, and a field of view of 75.7 degrees

Eye-Plug’s user-friendly Android app features a Photo Editor that allows you to adjust your point of focus, control background blur, and get creative with a ton of smart filters. The app also enables you to quickly share your raw or edited 3D footage with family and friends on social media.

The Weeview EyePlug 3D is compatible with devices running Android 4.4.2 or above. It’s available now with a very modest price tag of $44.99 USD.
