Wrist worn fitness trackers have rapidly grown in popularity in the last few years, and so far are the dominant force in the wearable tech sector.
Time is of the essence for fitness tracker manufacturers, just 6 months ago you would have bought one without a heart rate monitor and thought nothing of it, but moving into 2015 a built-in HRM is fast becoming a requisite for the fitness tracking populous.
So we compiled the list best fitness trackers 2015 with built-in heart rate monitor so you can have a look at your top options for a fitness tracker without the need for a chest strap. The list is in no particular order, and note that some of the trackers have not been released at the time of this post. Included in the list are the other features of each device, such as smart notifications (calls, text, email, social networks).
Also, the waterproof ratings for fitness trackers could confuse the pants back underneath Superman’s tights! So, I did my best to explain the capabilities of each device. Generally, water resistance ratings are based on laboratory pressure tests comparable to a swimmer sitting still under water at a certain depth.

Garmin Forerunner 225
I’m upgrading my tracker from a Fitbit Flex to a Surge. The only other one on this list I would consider is the Basis Peak. Great list btw
Thanks for the comment. Could you let us know why you prefer the Basis over the others?
Sure Can 🙂 Accuracy, Looks, Battery Life, Customer Support
I agree about the looks and customer support, but battery life and accuracy isn’t really any better than the most of the others.
I was excited about the FitBit surge but it’s HR accuracy during HIIT (Insanity) is inaccurate. I manually took my pulse and was at 170+ and it was recording as 120. This greatly affects calorie burn counts. I also have a Polar FT7 HRM which works perfectly (cumbersome strap of course) and this is how I knew that the Surge could not be right.
Thanks for the feedback Aaron! There’s a guy at my gym that uses the Polar FT7, and he also believes it’s pretty accurate. I think wrist worn optical HRMs still have a way to go before they’re as accurate as EKG chest straps. But, in my experience it’s normally the more dedicated fitness enthusiasts that wear chest straps, whereas more casual fitness goers are happier with it on their wrist. You are right about the calories, more exact HRM equals more exact calorie count!
I like your list…thanks it is very informative. One suggestion: a table summarizing the differences between the monitors would be great. Is that possible?
Dr. Raul.. Thanks for your comment!
Hello, I enjoy reading all of your list. I like to write a little comment to tell you.
Thanks for the list. Have you had a chance to compare the heart rate monitors vs an EKG machine? I’ve heard the MIO technology is the most accurate of the wrist based HRMs.
Res. Thanks for the comment. It’s true that Mio pride themselves as being the most accurate, they were also one of the first to get involved with optical heart rate monitoring. Sean, our resident crazy man who trains for triathlons and half marathons uses a Suunto set up – Ambit3 + Smart Belt chest strap. He has tested a few of them against the chest strap: both Fitbits, Basis Peak, Garmin 225 and Mio Alpha 2…….. “When I need to stay between 65% – 75% of maximum it’s very important that the HRM is accurate and stable. None of the wristbands you lent me are accurate enough to replace my strap. The last one, Garmin I think, was the most capable of holding the correct zone. It’s very important to work out your maximum heart rate and I wouldn’t rely on any of the wristbands to do it precisely.” ………. Somebody else obviously likes that Garmin 225 as well because we still haven’t got it back yet!
Hi! Do you have an opinion on the new FitBit Alta? Not sure if you can get data on it since it’s not out until March. Just thought there might be a beta test somewhere. 🙂
We think the Fitbit Alta is going to be popular, despite the lack of a heart rate monitor.
Thanks. 🙂
