It’s pretty clear that training for every single sport will be assisted by technology within the next few years..

Tech that helps athletes achieve higher performance levels is nothing new, but has traditionally been reserved for elite athletes and organizations with money to burn. Now, in the age of wearables, with Bluetooth, sensors and mobile apps being able to deliver the same features for an affordable price, anyone and everyone has access to pro level sports tech.

Combat sport has to be one of the biggest sports in the world, if not the biggest in terms of how many people practice it. I’ve just been checking out some Top 10 Most Popular Sports websites and didn’t find any combat sports ranking in their lists, instead they were mostly going on about football, soccer, tennis, golf and the likes. My opinion is that combat sports combined across all disciplines around the world would EASILY outrank any other sport! Maybe apart from soccer, or as an English gent like myself would say, football.

Striking with your hands is a part of most combat sports – obviously boxing is the first one that springs to mind. Striking/boxing is a major player in MMA, kickboxing, Muay Thai and many more.

Hykso – High-Tech Boxing Wearable..

Hykso are looking to help you improve your boxing skills with their new punch tracking sensors. Two versions of the boxing tech are on offer: Hykso Fit for every level fighters, and the more expensive Hykso Pro which as the name suggests is suitable for pro fighters and coaches.

The Hykso sensors are worn under your hand wraps. They weigh just 8.5 grams with dimensions of 38 x 19 x 4.7 mm – so basically they’re rather small and very lightweight. The sensors are geared up with two accelerometers, gyroscope, magnetometer, a micro-controller, Bluetooth 4.2 and a multi-color LED. They come with a charging dock that doubles as a carry case.

Hykso’s high-tech sensors would have no problem keeping up with the fastest hands in the west, as they are capable of tracking movement up to 1,000 times per second. Pro fighters have been involved with the development, so all types of punches are accounted for and tracked, such as jabs, hooks, uppercuts, crosses, the lot..

Great hand-speed is a winning attribute, but not if you haven’t got power to back it up. Hykso combines punch speed and punch type to quantify your overall striking intensity. It tracks the total amount of punches thrown in a session and allows you to set and surpass goals, ultimately removing guesswork from your training.

If you’re new to the sport or just box as a hobby and always wondered how your punching abilities would fare against the pros, you can compare your stats to some of the best in the business with the Hykso app. If you want to learn and emulate how the pros prepare for a fight then simply download pro drills with the app. Aspiring fighters can challenge other Hykso users and try to reach the top of the online leaderboard.

The California-based company are looking to start shipping the Hykso Fit in June 2016. A pair of sensors can be pre-ordered now for a discounted price of $219.99, down from the retail price of $249.95.

The Hykso pro which requires a subscription of $100 per month is available now.

Currently, the Hykso Fit app is only available for iOS, but Android should be available by the time of shipping. Hykso Pro is also only available for iOS, but the company informed us that Android support will be coming.
