There is no shortage of methods for getting directions when you’re driving, we have smartphones, onboard sat navs, smartwatches, and the good old-fashioned map, but they all share one common denominator; the fact you have to take your eyes off the road!

There is still the option of road signs to guide you on your journey, but if they don’t work for you, then you’ll be happy to know that augmented reality is coming soon to a windshield near you!

Many mortals are familiar with smart glasses, as made famous by Google Glass, they are otherwise known as Heads-up Displays. Smart Glasses, or Augmented Reality Glasses do exactly as the name suggests, they “Augment” (enhance) your optical reality by displaying directions, speedometer, weather reports, text messages, videos, etc, on the lenses.

There’s no doubt in the minds of the UrbanWearables team that augmented reality is going to arrive in a big way! If AR technology is being used with smart glasses, then it’s obviously going to land on other forms of glasses, i.e windsheilds!

One of the latest entries into the field is called “Navion” from Swiss firm WayRay. The clue is in the name as to what Navion’s main purpose is, yeh you got it, navigation. This smart tool will make sure you don’t get lost by projecting holographic arrows that coordinate with the road in front of you.

Navion uses gesture control and voice command to stay in touch with the organic entity who is trustingly placing their life in its bionic hands. According to WayRay, the Navion AR system is compatible with pretty much any windshield on any car.
