At London’s Wearable Technology Show 2016, Mio gave us a glimpse of what their upcoming fitness tracker, the Mio Slice will look like. It was health and fitness that dominated the event, also being the category that’s predicted to be the driving force wearable tech in the coming years – that does include sports. Wearables that track your steps and sleep have their benefits, but one that comes with the claim of lengthening your life span is slightly more tantalizing.

Mio optical heart rate technology is considered to be among the most reliable in the business. The Vancouver based company’s new fitness tracker, the Mio Slice combines their HRM technology with a new algorithm that measures your Personal Activity Intelligence, PAI for short; a term that Mio are hoping will become an industry standard metric.

Comparable to Body Mass Index (BMI) which uses your age, body mass and height to calculate your ideal weight; PAI takes into account your date of birth, gender, resting heart rate and maximum heart rate, and awards you a personalized PAI score every 7 days.

The PAI score is backed up with a study by the HUNT Research Center and their vast database of medical histories. Combining 20 years of medical data involving over 60,000 people over a period of 20 years, the research determined that maintaining a PAI score of 100 or more may increase the average lifespan by as much as 10 years, as well as help to prevent diseases related to capricious lifestyles.

Owners of the Mio Fuse, Alpha 2 and Link can also get involved with PAI thanks to the app for iOS and Android, but the new slice will be the only one that displays the PAI score on the wrist with its LCD display.

Along with heart rate and PAI, the Mio Slice also tracks steps, calories, distance and pace. Sleep monitoring isn’t a feature we find on previous Mio wearables, neither are smart notifications. Both these features however have been added to the upcoming Mio Slice, although we’re not exactly sure what notification types are included.

The Mio Slice release date should be some time in Q3 of 2016 with a pretty reasonable price tag of $99.

Whether the Mio Slice can really help me live 10 years longer is something I’ll probably never know, Because I’ll probably be dead by then..
