There’s new Android Wear smartwatch on the block, this time in the form of a GPS-enabled sporty number from Polar.

The Polar M600 is powered by Android Wear so it offers plenty of smarts and works with a ton of apps, from TripAdvisor and InstaWeather to Tinder and Uber. It has a built-in mic with Google Now at the ready for voice commands. You’ll get Google Cards, Translate, Maps and the other delights that come with the Android Wear OS, such as customizable watch faces, calls, text, email and smart notifications from social media apps.

The Polar M600 uses Bluetooth 4.2 to connect with your smartphone. It’s also Wi-Fi ready so if you’ve got a signal it can connect to the internet without your phone. Under the hood is a dual core processor and 4GB of storage for apps and music.

Sports and Fitness

On board is Polar’s own fitness app and GPS and GLONASS so it’s got all the activity tracking features under the sun, such as steps, distance, cadence, speed (indoor and outdoor using the accelerometer and GPS), calorie output, and sleep quality. There’s also map view, training routes, altitude readings, and the ability to discover training sessions that other users have shared by browsing the map on the Polar Flow web platform.

Pretty much every sport is covered with the Polar M600. A ton of sports profiles means you can choose from over a hundred Polar sports, you can also choose your own favorite sports. One thing the watch lacks is automatic exercise/sport recognition, but in many cases with other wearables this feature isn’t always that accurate anyway.

I almost forgot to mention the built-in optical heart rate monitor. Along with tracking your BPM 24/7 with a new and improved optical HRM, the Polar M600 has a HRmax estimate feature and heart rate zone training programs.

The slick Android sports watch has a 1.3″ 240 x 240 (260dpi) color TFT touchscreen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The top part of the watch which houses the technology and display is modular, so it can be popped out if you want to change the strap.

Waterproof – Swimming

The Polar M600 has an IPX8 waterproof rating so it’s safe to take for a swim. It is also capable of tracking your swims.

Compatible with Android 4.3 + and iPhone users running iOS 8.2 + can use it with the Android Wear for iOS app, but with limited features compared to Android phones.

Early Verdict

Polar’s new sporty Android number isn’t as pretty on the outside as the likes of the Huawei Watch or LG Watch Urbane, so it’s not much competition in terms of fashion. But, firms such as Garmin, Suunto and TomTom – Polar’s main competitors, will surely be looking over their giant shoulders at the M600.

This article only covers some of what the Polar M600 offers, as it basically has more features than Napoleon Bonaparte’s tadpole collection. What Polar offer in terms of multisport and GPS tracking, combined with the smarts and apps offered with Android Wear, makes the Polar M600 a really good idea..
