Is the Garmin Forerunner 920XT the Ultimate Sports Watch?

The new Garmin Forerunner 920XT multisport GPS watch has got more features than you could shake a stick at! Not only is the watch equipped for hardcore triathletes but it also earns a seat in the smartwatch arena, as it provides smart notifications such as calendar reminders, call alerts, texts and emails. 920XT also has a vibration alert feature

The Forerunner 920XT pretty much does it all, and more, with many of the features of Garmin’s activity trackers, ie Vivosmart and Vivofit packed into the watch, meaning you get all the usual tracking, calories, steps, distance, sleep monitoring, goals and ‘you’re being a lazy bugger’ alerts.

Heart Rate

When paired with a Garmin HRM, HRM-Swim, HRM-Tri or HRM-Run the 920XT offers additional features that can dial in your recovery status as well as your racing potential. The Recovery Check feature will give you a real-time indication of your recovery status within the first few minutes of any aerobic activities. Then the 920XT will estimate the recovery time needed before you repeat your session.

The Forerunner 920XT is very much geared up towards Running, Cycling and Swimming, hence the whole triathlon thing. You can quickly change your sport mode with a press of a button thanks to Garmin’s Multi-sport feature.

The 920XT advanced features helps you optimise your running form when paired with the HRM-Run monitor. This allows it to analyse your cadence, vertical oscillation, and ground contact time. There is also a vibrating metronome feature with audio alert to assist your cadence training.

The Forerunner 920XT will help you optimise your cycling performance with features such as Virtual Partner, Virtual Racer, Auto Lap, Pace alert, Courses profile, Multiple bike profiles, Vector compatibility and Bike speed/cadence sensor compatibility and ascent, descent and gradient data.

Get advanced swim metrics with the 920XT, such as stroke count, stroke type, pool lap and length counter and open-water swim distance. There is a drill logging feature which enables you to log your swim drills and kick sets, and two rest timers to make sure you push off the wall on time. Use time alerts to maintain your pace and distance alerts to let you know when your set is finished. 920XT has a waterproof rating of 5 ATM

GPS and Maps

Garmin were one of the first companies to bring commercial GPS receivers onto the global scene so you would expect high performance. The Forerunner 920XT is GPS-enabled and will keep track of your locations, routes and waypoints. Within the app there is a real-time reporter which lets family and friends track your location when you are training or taking part in a competition.

The 920XT has a 1.1 x 0.8 inch colour display with a resolution of 205 x 148 pixels.

Battery Life

The 920XT battery life is Up to 24 hours in normal GPS mode, and up to 40 hours in UltraTrac mode.

920XT has 100 hours of activity data memory.

Sync the 920XT to Garmin Connect for either iOS, Android or Windows smartphones via Bluetooth 4.0, and your desktop via a USB connection. The live tracking feature enables you to invite your followers using email or social media, so they can see your statistics and location on a map in real-time.

Smart notifications let you see email, text and other alerts on your watch when paired with your compatible Android or Apple device. When the 920XT is paired with your phone and the Garmin Connect Mobile app, your completed workouts can instantly upload.

The Garmin Forerunner 920XT does a heck of a lot! If you are a runner, cyclist, swimmer or all three, the 920XT is very hard to beat!

Keep in mind though, to take full advantage of the 920XT you will need to use it along with a Garmin HRM, plus it works in tandem with Garmin’s VIRB action camera range.
