Minecraft, one the most popular video games of all time has arrived for the Samsung Gear VR. I’m yet to get my head around why Minecraft is so popular after downloading the demo for the PS4 and feeling like I’d traveled back in time to the days of Horrace Goes Skiing. However, I’m assured by reliable sources that all those right angles really do amount to a lot of fun once you get past the pixellated weirdness. Besides, how can so many people be wrong?
Announced yesterday, Minecraft VR Edition is available from the Oculus store for $6.99. You’ll find the same features as Minecraft Pocket Edition, including: Multiplayer, Survival, Creative and Skins. You can choose whether to explore the Minecraft virtual world in first-person or theatre view.
Oculus worked closely with the creators of the blocky world so you can build and battle with the mobile freedom of the smartphone-powered Samsung Gear VR and inspect your buildings like you would in the real world. Obviously a Gear VR headset is required along with a compatible Samsung Galaxy smartphone: S7 / S7 edge / S6 edge+ / S6 edge / S6 / Galaxy Note5. A gamepad is also needed, Oculus are recommending the slightly pricey SteelSeries Stratus XL.
Minecraft for Gear VR is just a taster of what’s to come, as an Oculus Rift version is likely to arrive in the not so distant future.
