HeadsUP is a smart Heads-up display that attaches to your existing motor cycle helmet’s visor and displays your speed, directions and altitude. HUD’s first came about with jets and fighter pilots, the new HeadsUP for bikers is based on the same principles.

The intention of the North Carolina based creators of HeadsUP is to provide a more effective way to view your riding stats without having to shift your focus away from the road ahead, essentially making road biking a safer experience.

Bikers traveling at 60 mph cover in excess of 150 ft in the time they look down to check their speedometer. Having the information displayed on your visor could reduce that time according to the makers of HeadsUP. They’re not the only ones who have done the maths! Through years of safety testing, the makers of the famous Skully AR-1 augmented reality helmet can iterate the time saved by viewing a visor display.

HeadsUP is designed to be simple and compatible with virtually any modern motorcycle helmet. A small control box is attached to the rear of your helmet, and a small module is mounted inside your visor just out of view. when the HeadsUP system is installed the rider cannot see it or feel any of its components.

If you don’t know where your’e going on a bike, navigation can be tricky, but when you sync your HeadsUP to its companion app for iOS or Android smartphones you’ll get real-time directions in your visor. HeadsUP connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth, it also enables you to stream music to your helmet.

The on-board GPS brings you speed data with an update rate of 10 times per second so you can rest assured that the holographic speedometer in your visor is providing an accurate reading.

HeadsUP is gong to be in competition with the famous Skully-AR1 smart helmet. The difference between them is that HeadsUP is a removable module that fits your current helmet, and Skully is a complete helmet with the smart technology built-in.

There is also quite a substantial price difference, the HeadsUP system is expected to retail at around $250 (£165), the Skully AR-1 price will be around $1.400 (£910)

The first batch of HeadsUP should be shipping in March 2016
